Warning: This is long. :)
Last Saturday we threw Luke his first real birthday party (his birthday isn't until this Thursday, but it was the only day Matt could be there). Like his first drop-off friend one, and boy was it crazy! January is a pretty dull time around here, so I was able to put more work and planning into the party. It was so much fun!
We decided to go with a Spy themed party.
Here is the invite.
They are mini manila folders (I just cut out of normal sized ones).
On the big day of, Luke had a surprise visit from a friend who brought him an awesome skateboard with elbow/knee pads. Thanks Jane!
Matt had a big test for the first half of the day, so I was running around like a mad woman trying to get everything ready. We had the party later in the day, so he could be there to help (or run the show really!).
I had my initial plans and ideas for the party, but after talking them over with Matt, he wanted to do a much more elaborate party.... I had to remind him that we invited 17 kids...so it couldn't be too crazy.
When each child arrived they received a name badge and passport. In case you are curious, I just made all the tags, invites and the passport in photo shop.
Each child also received a spy-kit at the end of the party. Here were the contents.
So about the cakes...I saw these adorable bomb cupcakes and just HAD to make them. They were surprisingly easy. The bomb is just a Lindt truffle that I poked a hole in and the fuse is a pull'n peal twizzler. Oh and then I just made cookie icing to pipe the TNT on (which was tricky!).
And I saw the mustache cake on the one and only Pinterest, and thought it'd be cute...even though it didn't even get eaten at the party. Really, it was all for me (after all, I have been craving yellow cake and home made chocolate frosted cake....mmmm).
My dining room always looks bright green in pics...but I assure you, it is not. :)
Luke killin time before the party. It was brutal (for him) having to wait till 4 pm!
It was Matt's idea to have a mission plan...he even typed it up. Isn't he cute?
After they finger printed their passports, they went and did "spy training" while waiting for all of the kids to arrive. They got their passports stamped after completing different steps. Then they came up stairs to the "trip wire room."
And in between each thing there were different bomb clues Matt hid throughout the house.
Then they had to go up to the attic, in the dark, with a flash light to find the missing puzzle pieces. But, a bad guy (if you read the little story at the top), was sleeping up there. Matt made the bed look like he was asleep and played snoring on his iPhone....talk about freaking out the little kids!!! Haha
Then they would have to dig through some "poison" which was a bucket of cooked rice, watered down, to find a clue.
Next, they had to go to the basement and fight the "bad guys" to find the last clue.
After that they had to crawl under the balloons in the doorway to get into the "dungeon" and find a key lock.

Okay, that might have been really confusing...but you'll see how it all played out in the following photos.
Get this...Matt even dressed up like a secret spy...all his idea. The kids thought it was SO cool.
He's such a good sport.
The whole point of the mission was to find the pinata bomb that Bomb Voyage stole from us. We had to find it before it exploded!
Yes, I made it and it took me a week...and I will never do it again.
Notice Dev's cheek? Poor guy got trampled pretty badly, after that he steered clear and clinged to my friend Bree.
After the successful mission (which was surprisingly not very chaotic, considering all the kids), we ate pizza, apples and Capri Suns for dinner!
I had bought fresh pizza dough from our favorite Italian Market, Alesci's (25 cents a ball!) and had the pizzas rolled out before hand. Two mom's stayed to help out (THANK YOU!) and finished the pizza's while we were on our mission.
Want to hear something gross? Luke tried to blow out his candles while chewing food and a huge piece of pizza flew out of his mouth and hit someone....luckily the cupcakes weren't harmed. Gross!
Present time...this boy got all the legos and boy-toys he could ever ask for!
The kids got their party bags and went on home. Whew!!! It was an exhausting day, but we both agreed that it was worth it and was a lot of fun. We're still hearing kids talk about it. Yeah, we're cool. ;)
After it was over, I put my very sore feet up, while the boys (including Matt) ran around driving cars, flying air planes and playing like crazies until bed time.
Happy (early) Birthday to my big FIVE year old LUKEY!
